10 Skills You Need to Succeed At Almost Anything
by Mack on Thursday, July 31st 2008

success

Success factors

What does it take to succeed? A positive attitude? Well, sure, but that’s hardly enough. The Law of Attraction? The Secret? These ideas might act as spurs to action, but without the action itself, they don’t do much.

Success, however it’s defined, takes action, and taking good and appropriate action takes skills. Some of these skills (not enough, though) are taught in school (not well enough, either), others are taught on the job, and still others we learn from general life experience.

Below is a list of general skills that will help anyone get ahead in practically any field, from running a company to running a gardening club. Of course, there are skills specific to each field as well – but my concern here is with the skills that translate across disciplines, the ones that can be learned by anyone in any position.

A message from the "heart" of Skewlbuoy Inc.
by Mack on Sunday, May 18th 2008
It feels good to be back home. I had been traveling and was lost for a second, dodging the curve-balls life was throwing at me. I realized a long time ago that it is not all about me, after all we are all connected, my experiences mirror those of another person somewhere out there....here is a poem to help you make the next chess move.

[IF]

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream--and not make dreams your master,
If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!

--Rudyard Kipling

Thankyou to my friends, partners, and all the Skewlbuoys out there, we stay afloat because of you.

Did they not say "If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants,”?

Collectively we all are that giant. We help each other see the world in a brand new way everyday...    more»»

Mantras to live by.
by Skewlbuoy on Saturday, May 3rd 2008
So many times I have come across gazillions of philosophies on how to live a fulfilling and happy life. Many of them seem to be more about the rhetoric and beauty of the English language aka "philosophising". It is the applicability of many of these approaches that I worry about, so after much thought I decided to summarize a few mantras to live by.

• Don't undermine your worth by comparing yourself to others. It is because we are different that each of us is special.

• Don't set your goals by what other people deem important. Only you know what is best for you.

• Don't take for granted the things closest to your heart. Cling to them as you would your life, for without them life would be meaningless

• Don't let life slip through your fingers by living in the past or for the future. By living your life one day at a time, you live up all the days of your life.

• Don't give up when you still have something left to give, Nothing is really over . . . till the moment you stop trying.

• Don't be afraid to admit that you are less than perfect .It is this fragile thread that binds us together.

• Don't be afraid to encounter risks. It is by taking chances, that we learn to be brave.

• Don't shut love out of your life by saying it's impossible to find.
The quickest way to receive love is to give love
The fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly.
And the best way to keep love is to give it wings.

• Don't dismiss your dreams.
To be without dreams is to be without hope
To be without hope is to be without purpose.

• Don't run through life so fast that you forget not only where you've been, but also where you are going.

• Life is not a race, but a journey to be savored every step of the way.

Don't settle for a "B"
by WhistlerJones on Wednesday, April 23rd 2008
Harvey MacKay tells the story of a professor who stood before his class of 30 senior molecular biology students.

Before passing out the final exam he said, "I have been privileged to be your instructor this semester, and I know how hard you have worked to prepare for this test. I also know most of you are off to medical school or graduate school next Fall.    more»»

I've Learned: Observatory/ Motivational Thoughts
by Skewlbuoy on Wednesday, April 2nd 2008
I've learned that you cannot make someone love you. All you can do is be someone that can be loved. The rest is up to them.
I've learned that no matter how much I care, some people just don't care back.
I've learned that it takes years to build up trust, and only seconds to destroy it.

A life perspective…
by Skewlbuoy on Thursday, March 13th 2008
Picture this:

A model walks down the room wearing an outifit that is so exquisite, it creates a pop culture phenomenon that redefines how women dress in the 21st century. It is one of the many seeds that are sowed, in a feminist movement that is giving us many heroines who today still fight for those without a voice.    more»»

…because it is all connected.
by Skewlbuoy on Thursday, March 6th 2008
Someone I respect a lot told me “every person in their hearts-of-hearts believes that they are unique, and in all cases it is true, the only sin is that they never share this light/talent with the rest of the world”.
